Position Summary

Stathletes builds hockey software and data tools that help people analyze and understand the game. Our systems bring together game events, player and puck tracking, computer vision outputs, analytics and video to deliver dependable products for teams, media and fans.

As Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform, you will independently own the database and data-platform architecture for our next-generation products, lead hands-on implementation and take responsibility for ongoing database operations.

Working with our senior technical leadership, DevOps and product colleagues, you will make platform decisions, agree integration boundaries and deliver improvements in practical stages while supporting existing systems. This is an individual contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Own the architecture and implementation of data storage, processing and delivery systems, translating product needs into a phased technical plan.
Evaluate database, storage and cloud options, balancing performance, reliability, operating cost and team capacity.
Build reliable ingestion and processing pipelines with validation, retries, backfills and reprocessing for historical and live data.
Connect events, tracking, computer vision outputs, analytics and video references through consistent identities, timestamps and data contracts.
Define data models, quality states, lineage and retention so raw, processed and human-validated data can be traced and used appropriately.
Build secure, documented and versioned APIs and data services for customers and internal teams.
Own PostgreSQL performance and safe schema migrations, including query tuning, indexing, locking, concurrency and workload separation where appropriate.
Own production database administration, including configuration, access controls, capacity planning, maintenance and upgrades.
Define and test backup, restore, replication and failover procedures against agreed recovery goals. Lead database incident diagnosis and recovery.
Partner with DevOps on infrastructure, deployment, monitoring and security. Document operating procedures and share database support and recovery knowledge.
Provide technical guidance through design discussions, code reviews and practical mentorship. Explain tradeoffs clearly and follow through on agreed decisions.

Qualifications & Skills

A track record of independently owning production backend systems or data platforms, from architecture and hands-on implementation through migration and ongoing operation.
Deep SQL and relational database expertise, including data modelling, query tuning, indexing, transactions and safe schema changes, with hands-on production PostgreSQL experience.
Practical database administration experience covering monitoring, capacity, permissions, maintenance, tested restores and safe upgrades.
Experience troubleshooting production incidents and planning database recovery and high availability.
Strong programming skills and experience building APIs, ingestion pipelines and background processing that handle failures and data corrections reliably.
Sound judgment about database, storage and cloud services, including scalability, security, operating cost and complexity.
The ability to own a technical domain while collaborating with a broader technical lead and delivering incremental improvements within team priorities and budget.

Our Environment

Our current environment includes Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, and DigitalOcean infrastructure and object storage. You will help determine how that foundation should evolve.

Rails experience is a strong plus. We also welcome engineers with strong backend experience in other languages who are willing to work in and learn our existing systems.

Helpful Experience

Streaming or time-series data, analytical stores or data lake architectures.
Containers, CI/CD, infrastructure automation and cloud monitoring.
Sports data, tracking feeds, computer vision outputs or video metadata.
